The Veterans Affairs Office is located in the basement of the Shelby County Court House. Normal hours of operation are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If needed, arrangements may be made for meetings on Tuesday and Thursday, or at other times not designated. The Director is William A. (Bill) Sorensen, Master Sergeant, USA (Ret). We provide a wide range of services to the veteran and their families. Those services range from pension and compensation to health care, education and requesting service records. Figures released by the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs for the fiscal year 2005, Shelby County had a veteran population of 1,290. These figures placed Shelby County in the top half of Iowa's 99 counties. Total expenditures brought in to the county is $2,888,000. On a monthly average, working 8-hour days, 12 days per month, the Veterans Affairs Office sees an average 85 individuals in the office, handles 25 new enrollments, receives or places 120 telephone calls, sees 25 new clients, receives or sends 95 pieces of mail and files 35 claims.
