Gene Cavanaugh, Sheriff

The County's principal peace officer is the Shelby County Sheriff, who is elected every 4 years. The Sheriff and the Deputies are the law enforcement for the residents of Shelby County, and by contract, provide law enforcement for the towns of Shelby, Irwin, Elk Horn, and Defiance based on an hourly rate. These towns are billed monthly and are provided with a monthly report of activities.
